What PC-3000 Express is

The PC-3000 Express is a six-port board that plugs into a PCI Express slot in a dedicated recovery workstation. ACE Lab describes four SATA ports and two PATA ports, with four drives connected at once, and a managed power supply for each channel with over-voltage and over-current protection. The board is sold with the PC-3000 software, which contains vendor-specific utilities for the major hard drive makers. Those utilities talk to the drive in its factory or technological mode rather than through the normal ATA command set.

The purpose is to make an unreadable drive readable. The software can read and write the flash ROM, work with service area modules and defect lists, disable damaged heads and regenerate the translator, the table that maps logical sectors to physical locations. Once the drive responds, the examiner images it with Data Extractor Express, which together with the board forms what ACE Lab calls the Express Professional System. For a forensic laboratory the Express is the bench tool for cases where a plain write-blocked image is not possible.

Primary applications

Where it is used

  • Diagnosing why a SATA or PATA hard drive fails to identify or read
  • Backing up and repairing firmware modules in the service area
  • Head map and translator work on drives with damaged heads or corrupted tables
  • Imaging several drives on one board with per-port power control
  • Research into drive firmware behaviour under laboratory conditions

Who uses it

  • Data recovery laboratories
  • Forensic laboratories with a storage bench
  • Hard drive repair technicians
  • Storage researchers

Capabilities and limits

Major capabilities

  • Six-port PCI Express tester board with four SATA and two PATA ports
  • Four drives connected at the same time with independent power control
  • Vendor-specific technological utilities for service area, modules and defect lists
  • Flash ROM read and write, head disabling and translator regeneration
  • Resource Manager to allocate ports and processes between jobs
  • Pairs with Data Extractor Express for sector-level imaging
  • Supports 3.5, 2.5, 1.8 and 1.0 inch drives in SATA and PATA form

Technical limitations

  • SATA and PATA only on the board itself. SAS, USB and NVMe need other PC-3000 products or adapters
  • Every firmware change alters the evidence drive and must be documented and justified
  • Needs a dedicated workstation with free PCI Express slots, so it is not a field tool
  • Operator skill decides the result. The same board in untrained hands can make a drive worse
