NetworkNetwork & Cloud ForensicsCloud Storage InvestigationCollect and read AWS, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace logs as sound evidence.Cloud Forensic Analyst
Much of the evidence in a modern case sits in a data centre that belongs to someone else. The cloud forensic analyst collects it through the right channels, understands how the platform logs it and pieces together what happened.

What the work is
- Scopes what cloud evidence exists for a case: audit logs, storage, virtual machines, identity records and SaaS application data.
- Collects evidence through provider consoles, APIs and legal requests, recording exactly what was collected, when and under what authority.
- Analyses audit logs such as AWS CloudTrail, Azure activity logs and Google Cloud audit logs to trace how an account was used and misused.
- Snapshots and examines virtual machines and containers, and knows what a snapshot does not capture.
- Investigates cloud storage and collaboration platforms for data theft, insider activity and account compromise.
- Works with incident responders on cloud-based attacks and with legal teams on jurisdiction and data residency questions.
- Explains cloud evidence in reports for readers who have never opened a cloud console.
Skills to build
- Working knowledge of AWS, Azure and Google Cloud: identity, storage, compute and logging
- Identity and access management, since most cloud incidents start with a credential
- Log analysis in volume, with query languages and scripting
- Virtual machine and hypervisor forensics
- The shared responsibility model and what a provider will and will not hand over
- Legal process for data held by providers, including cross-border requests
- Data protection awareness: the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 in India and the General Data Protection Regulation where it applies
- Working alongside incident response and legal teams
Tools you will meet
How the role grows
Stages, not promises. Titles differ between employers and the time each stage takes depends on the cases you get to work on.
- 01Cloud or Security Operations Analyst
Learns the platforms from the inside: where logs live, how identity works and what an alert from the cloud console means.
- 02Cloud Forensic Analyst
Collects and analyses cloud evidence for investigations and incidents and writes it up with the authority trail intact.
- 03Senior Cloud Investigator
Handles multi-cloud and cross-border matters, advises legal teams on what can be obtained and reviews collections made by others.
- 04Cloud Incident Response Specialist
Works the live cloud compromise: containment advice, log preservation and the reconstruction of attacker activity across accounts.
- 05Cloud Security Investigations Lead
Builds the capability, the logging standards that make later investigation possible and the relationships with providers and regulators.

Questions people ask
Do I need to be a cloud engineer first?
A cloud background helps a lot, because you need to know where the logs live and what they mean. Many analysts come from cloud administration or security operations and add the forensic method afterwards.
How do you image the cloud?
You usually do not, in the disk sense. You snapshot virtual machines, export logs and storage objects and record hashes and timestamps for each. The method is different but the principles of preservation and documentation are the same.
Which DFRTI courses apply?
Cloud Storage Investigation and Virtual Machine / Hypervisor Forensics are the core. The specialised cloud and network certificate covers this track.
Can I pull cloud data if I have the password?
Having a password is not authorisation. Access needs the consent of the account holder or legal process, and in India the Information Technology Act 2000 treats unauthorised access as an offence. Collect through the lawful channel and document it.
Career guides describe typical work and skills. They do not promise employment, placement or a salary, and roles vary between employers and countries.
